The Legend

The ghost of a soldier is said to hover near his grave, lights are seen in the cemetery and a ghostly dog may chase you away.

Effects have been added to the image of the real cemetery so you can  get a good impression of what others have described to us what they have seen in the cemetery.

No one can actually pinpoint when the ghosts started showing up at Beard Cemetery outside of Dundas, Ohio. Most likely, it is because the cemetery is on such a remote and treacherous piece of dirt roadway, few made it to the cemetery until the word began to spread.

It has been in existence for over a hundred years, the graves are well cared for and it is almost oddly pristine with large trees and many headstones closely resembling their original state. But the oddities, they came. Visitors to the cemetery say they have seen the old headstones stones glowing in the night. There have been several who have noted a young soldier dressed in civil war uniform standing at attention above a grave.  But more than any, many have seen a dog with glowing red eyes romping around the headstones and heard the sound of digging in the leaves and brush by the cemetery gate.

No one can quite pinpoint exactly who haunts the cemetery.  The town of Dundas just up the road sprung up along with the Hamden Iron Furnace still exists. However, the furnace where many who were buried in Beard Cemetery worked and the homes where they lived are long gone.  Like many areas once flourishing during the time of coal and iron a hundred and fifty years ago, they were abandoned and left for time to wear away.  Now they are replaced with forests of pine trees and tall grass meadows as far as the eye can see.

Only the names inscribed on the headstones and a few foundations of old houses still remain. Well, of course, along with a ghost, a dog with glowing eyes and curious ghost hunters craving a bit of a scare to put goosepimples along their arms.
