Brown County Ohio Ghosts and Hauntings -Rankin House State Memorial
Rankin House State Memorial
Ripley, Ohio 45167
On a high hill in the town of Ripley overlooking the Ohio River stands a haunted house. From 1825 to 1865, John Rankin opened its doors to anyone escaping slavery in the south. Nearly 2000 slaves are said to have stayed with the Rankin family. There are steps leading up to the house, a path that led from the Ohio River, through town and up the wooded hillside to the safety of the Rankin home. Ghostly voices have been heard here, along with the sound of footfalls of those who were taking their first steps of freedom.
