Stages Pond State
Nature Preserve
Ashville, OH 43103
One muggy August in the 1800s, a farmer who lived across Ward Road was taking in hay. A storm blew across the fields and he ran to get out of the rain. Lightening bolted across the sky along with an explosion of thunder right after. The wagon team he was using to take in the hay bolted down over the road, across the muddy land around Stage’s Pond. Straight into the marshy, quick-sand-like muck they went, mired and fighting until they sank so deeply they could not be retrieved. The screams of the horses and their stomping hooves can be heard before a storm in the pond area.
