Old Man's Cave Haunted Hiking Trail –
Hocking Hills State Park
Logan, OH 43138
A trapper from the 1700s named Retzler has haunted the hiking trail for over 200 years and has been seen with his wolfhound at Old Man's Cave. Newspapers from the 1900s often had articles of how two boys came upon the cave and a man dressed in leather clothing with a gun slung over his shoulder and a wolfhound by his side walked passed them and disappeared inside the cave, where later the skeleton was discovered. Mistakenly called Rowe or Roe by a staff person in the 1970s in a news article (Roe is a party to legal proceedings whose real name is unknown), the incorrect name was perpetuated for many years.
The one-way loop trail is approximately 1 to 1.5 miles long and begins at the kiosk at Upper Falls. Hikers take the steps up to Old Man’s Cave, which ends at the Naturalist Cabin and Visitor Center. The trail is 1 mile and takes about 60 minutes.
