Columbiana County Ohio Ghosts and Hauntings: Gretchen's Lock
Gretchen's Lock
Beaver Creek State Park

E.H. Gill traveled by ship from France with his wife and 7-year-old daughter, Gretchen, to help build the Sandy and Beaver Canal. During the trip, his wife was washed overboard. Tragedy struck again while working on the canal; Gretchen died of malaria and was buried within Lock 41 temporarily until her father could return to his home country. Upon his return trip, the ship that Gill traveled with Gretchen’s corpse was lost at sea during a storm. Gretchen returns to the lock once in a while, murmuring her dying prayer, “Bury me with my mother.”
